Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Child Care Floater provides flexible support throughout the Early Childhood program by assisting classrooms, maintaining smooth daily operations, and ensuring children receive quality care in a safe and nurturing environment.
The Floater works collaboratively with Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, and program leadership to provide classroom coverage, support transitions, assist during high-need times such as meals and naps, maintain ratio requirements, and respond to the changing needs of the program throughout the day. This position requires strong communication skills, flexibility, multitasking abilities, and the ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and age groups.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Float between classrooms throughout the day to provide support where needed.
- Check in regularly with Lead and Assistant Teachers to assess classroom needs and assist accordingly.
- Provide classroom coverage to maintain appropriate licensing ratios and smooth program operations.
- Support classrooms during high-need times including meals, transitions, rest time, outdoor play, and staff breaks.
- Assist with supervising children and maintaining a safe, clean, and nurturing environment.
- Build positive relationships with children, families, staff, and program leadership.
- Adapt quickly to changing schedules, classroom environments, and staffing needs throughout the day.
- Utilize sound judgment and maintain professionalism while working in fast-paced and high-demand situations.
- Assist with classroom organization, cleaning, sanitizing, and preparation of materials and activities.
- Ensure YMCA policies, licensing regulations, and safety procedures are followed at all times.
- Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and staff.
- Communicate effectively with staff members and leadership regarding classroom needs, concerns, or incidents.
- Support children in need and assist with behavior guidance using positive and respectful approaches.
- Ensure zero tolerance for abuse and actively participate in the protection of youth and teens.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and program activities.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- Experience working with children preferred
- Ability to work effectively in multiple classroom environments and with diverse personalities
- Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills
- Ability to remain calm, flexible, and professional under pressure
- Ability to relate positively to children, families, branch staff members, and volunteers
- Must be dependable, adaptable, and team-oriented
